BSA TEACHING GROUP Inaugural Conference

BSA TEACHING GROUP

Inaugural Conference

28th – 30th September 2012

Menzies Strathallan Hotel, Birmingham

This year’s eagerly anticipated BSA Teaching Group Inaugural Conference, sponsored by The Higher Education Academy, will be held at the Menzies Strathallan Hotel, Birmingham and places are already starting to fill up!

With current BSA President and former Chair of the Council of UK Heads and Professors of Sociology, Professor John Holmwood one of three high-profile guest speakers at the event, this year promises to be even better than last years’ AtSS conference, with delegates able to attend exam training sessions run by chief examiners from the major exam boards and select from workshop sessions to match specific career development targets. There will also be a number of specialist workshops to help aid development, including sharing Ofsted experiences, Differentiation Gifted and Talented, and ICT in the Classroom. Alongside these training sessions and workshops there will also be a number of postgraduate micro-lectures taking place.

BSA President, John Holmwood: “In a context of widening inequality, slow economic growth and the radical restructuring of public services (including secondary, further and higher education), these are uncertain times for pupils and students. Our times urgently call for sociology as both commentary and diagnosis. Ours is a discipline that provides students with an education for employment in which they can make a difference and for an active role as engaged citizens. As C. Wright Mills argued, the purpose of sociology is to make connections and this conference of teachers of sociology will allow those of us teaching sociology in different settings to connect and share our understandings of the discipline and its role in educating students about the problems and challenges of a life lived in common and lived with a proper regard for others.”

If you are a teacher of the Social Sciences then this is an event not to be missed, with many using the conference as an opportunity to network and aid their Continuing Personal Development (CPD), demonstrating a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence.

The full conference (including two nights accommodation and food) is available to all BSA members for a significantly reduced rate of just £260; Teaching Group members £285 and non-members £350. Day rates are available and there is no late booking fee. The Postgraduate day rate is just £35! To book please visit the BSA Teaching Group websiteand direct any enquiries to: bsatg@britsoc.org.uk, telephone: (0191) 383 0839.
