Invitation to a welcome reception for Prof. Islah Jad, Birzeit University, 3 August
You are cordially invited to a reception to welcome Prof. Islah Jad, director of the Institute for Women’s Studies, Birzeit University, Palestine.

Following this, Prof. Jad will give a public lecture, ‘Higher education under Israeli Occupation: why the academic and cultural boycott is effective’ , 6pm MS.B3.03 (Zeeman building).
Prof. Jad researches on gender and politics in Palestine. She founded the first women studies programme in the Arab world at Birzeit university in 1993. She has written on the NGO-ization of the Arab women’s movement, women activists in Hamas, and gender and citizenship in Palestine. She was a contributor to the 2006 Arab Human Development Report on women’s empowerment in the Arab world and has been a gender trainer for a number of Palestinian ministries. She is also a leading member of the National Palestinian Academic Boycott campaign as well as being a feminist activist.
Prof. Jad is visiting Warwick in August as part of a British Academy-funded partnership between the Centre for Women and Gender Studies at Warwick and the Institute for Women’s Studies at Birzeit under the theme of ‘Reconceptualising Gender: Transnational Perspectives’.
This will be her first visit to Warwick.
